Course Structure

 

School Direct PGCE with Concorde Partnership (UWE)

Course Structure in brief

Induction – 2 days in late August to prepare you for the course, settings you will be working in and covering the basic expectations for the PGCE qualification

Block of training at UWE – for Primary and all secondary subjects, except PE and DT. There is a block of days to help you get to grips with planning for teaching, the national curriculum etc. PE and DT have these days with the Concorde Partnership.

Professional Development – nearly every week you will attend a session with Concorde Partnership in a series of session that cover e.g. planning, differentiating for Special Needs, behaviour management, safeguarding, working with parents, marking, assessment and data. 

Block of Teaching Practice (placement A) – you will be placed in one of our schools until Christmas. You will gradually increase your teaching time to 10 hours a week. You will be supported by a mentor and be observed regularly.

Block of Teaching Practice (placement B) - you will be placed in one of our schools until June. You will gradually increase your teaching time to 20 hours a week. You will be supported by a mentor and be observed regularly. Primary trainees will teach in the KS not taught in placement A and return to placement A after 8 weeks.

 

Academic Assignments

There are four main assessed assignments, two at Master’s level. These cover reflection on your teaching, classroom based enquiry, subject knowledge enhancement and professional practice. Preparation for these assignments is at UWE, although you will be supported by your mentors and other professionals in the Concorde Partnership.

Additional Activities

You will be able to visit schools in the other phase (primary or secondary); be encouraged to provide extra-curricular activities for learners; support on school trips; observe other subjects and teachers
