Olympus Academy Trust

Olympus Development Hub (ODH)

Welcome to the Olympus Development Hub (ODH), the Olympus Trust off-site provision, which provides personalised learning experiences for students who normally attend one of our secondary schools.

At The Olympus Trust we are deeply committed to inclusion and work collaboratively across the secondary schools to provide intervention to young people who are experiencing difficulties managing the expectations in their home school. This may often lead to poor behaviour in their school, which could lead to suspension and, at times, escalating issues which may place the student at risk of permanent exclusion.

Our Values

 Be Kind

 Work Hard

 Join In

The Olympus Development Hub was therefore created to act as an assessment, intervention and learning provision to help students to break these cycles of poor behaviour and therefore reduce the likelihood of suspension from school.

The ODH typically caters for around 10-12 students per day who attend from across all four secondary schools within the Olympus Trust.

The Olympus Development Hub Aims

Our overall aim is to provide each student with a safe and inclusive environment which supports them with their learning and wider social, emotional and mental health needs, and enables them to successfully reintegrate back into their mainstream school.

If a student is having negative experiences in education and has found themselves in a position where it is difficult to break the pattern of poor choices, ODH is placed as an asset to our partnership schools to re-engage them with their learning and school attendance, and reduce further risk of suspension.

At the core of the ODH is the message to students that they can be successful. Helping them to recognise this, to understand their strengths and qualities will help them to become confident and happier learners.

Referral into ODH

Students are referred to ODH on a fixed ‘short-term’ basis by the school they attend. This will usually be in response to escalating needs where the school staff feel that the student is in need of specific interventions and time away from the school environment to reflect.

Our Curriculum

The Olympus Development Hub has a range of facilities to support the learning of students. The curriculum consists of specialised Maths, English and Science lessons that are commensurate with student levels. Staff focus on ensuring that the learning experience of students referred to the ODH remains as bespoke as practically possible, while delivering high quality core lessons to students from Key Stage 3 and 4.

Staff are skilled at adaptive teaching and inclusive practice in the classroom and have experience of supporting students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. ODH staff will always work closely with the SENDCo in the home school to ensure that individual learning plans are understood and implemented.

The ODH also offers an opportunity for students to experience success outside of the classroom and deliver enrichment activities as part of the curriculum offer.

Measuring Academic Progress at the Olympus Development Hub

Due to the nature of the provision, some students are not in the ODH for a very long period of time and so the normal expectations in relation to measuring progress in the subjects they are studying has to be adapted. However, we do measure progress and this forms part of the exit report for each student.

Progress in terms of social skills, managing anger skills, improvements in confidence and self-esteem and belonging are never underestimated and are an important part of the review process for each student placed at the ODH.

Assessment

One of the significant benefits the staff at the ODH have is the ability to work with a much smaller group of students.  This allows staff to assess students and to better understand any underlying issues which are preventing them from being successful learners in their own school. These assessments will always be shared with parents and the home school, and will form part of their transition back into the mainstream environment.

Transition back into school

Each student will have a detailed exit report prior to them returning to their home school and where possible a meeting will take place with ODH staff, parents, school representatives and the student to discuss the details about their return.

Staff at the ODH will remain in contact with students once they have returned to their school in order to support a positive transition. The relationships staff have formed are a vital element of the success we see with successful reintegration into their school.

Staff at the ODH maintain strong links with our partnership schools throughout the placement and this remains the case once the student leaves.

Safeguarding

All staff at ODH are safeguarding trained and receive yearly updates as detailed in the Abbeywood Community School Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.

Guy Gibson, Associate Assistant Head Teacher & Strategic Lead for the ODH, has higher level child protection training and works closely with the Trust DSLs through the Safeguarding Forum.

Where there are any identified safeguarding issues at the time of placement, staff in the ODH work closely with the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead.

If a member of the ODH staff have safeguarding concerns about a student attending the provision, they will contact the school DSL immediately to raise concern in order for the school DSL to take action.

All staff working in the ODH have received external training for positive handling and restraint.

Parents and carers, must make sure that the ODH staff have the most up-to-date mobile contact number in case of an emergency.

Policies

The Olympus Development Hub is a Trust provision located within the Engineering Centre- the Engineering Centre is led by the Headteacher of Abbeywood Community School.

The ODH follow Abbeywood Community School Policies as appropriate in relation to behaviour, which includes physical intervention and searching, screening and confiscation.

Attendance

Students are expected to arrive on time for their day at ODH at 8.45am.

Parents and carers should inform the home school of the reason for any absence, following normal school attendance policy protocols.

ODH staff will contact the home school by 9:30am each morning if a student fails arrive for their session at ODH.

Where attendance is a concern, ODH staff will work with the home school to identify barriers and support an improvement in attendance.

Uniform

All students are expected to wear full school uniform.  It is not acceptable to wear non-school uniform.  Parents and schools will be notified on the day of a failure to wear school uniform and persistent issues will result in students being sent home to change and home schools setting appropriate sanctions.  Anyone requiring support over school uniform should contact a member of staff to discuss.

Mobile Phones

All mobile phones will be secured on arrival by ODH staff at the start of the day.  All phones will be returned to students at the end of the day.

Failure to do so will result in your parent and home school being notified and your ODH placement being jeopardised.

Parent and school feedback

ODH staff will always inform parents and carers of difficult behaviour which doesn’t meet requirements of the day.
