From Student to Trainee Teacher

I am a Teaching Assistant Apprentice at Bradley Stoke Primary School (BSCS Primary Phase). Before my current role I was studying at BSCS Post 16 whilst doing work experience at BSCS Primary Phase.

I came into my current role by applying to SGS College to start an apprenticeship with BSCS Primary Phase after applying for a Supporting Teaching and Learning course.

“I feel very happy with my role and I enjoy being part of the BSCS Primary team”

Before becoming an apprentice I didn’t have any specific training in teaching and supporting children, only my work experience at the school. However, whilst being at BSCS Primary I have received safeguarding training, Speak and Language training, Health & Safety training and much more alongside my apprenticeship training.

I decided on the apprenticeship route after medical advice that suggested a 4 year degree at University might not be a sensible choice for me. I had a spinal operation during my GCSEs so couldn’t sit all my original exams, and my surgeon advised me not to go to university to become a fully qualified teacher straight away as he wasn’t sure if I was even able to work with children and he didn’t want me studying without any physical experience. I then decided to become an apprentice because it would give me the best opportunity to figure out my physical limits around young children.

I feel very happy with my role and I enjoy being part of the BSCS Primary team. I love working with the children and I am constantly improving my knowledge whilst I train to be a qualified Teaching Assistant.

I think being part of the Olympus Academy Trust has really benefited our school over the years. We are now part of a group of schools who work together to successfully shape our culture and ethos; where everyone feels valued and has an opportunity to contribute to better our teaching methods.
